Mothering Sunday by Catherine Lewington

Somewhere beneath the cards and bouquets of flowers exchanged on Mothering Sunday lies an historical tradition that goes back centuries. Mothering Sunday was originally a time when people returned to their ‘Mother’ church, the one in which they were baptized or where they attended services when they were children. This meant that families were able to come together at least once a year. It was customary for people working as servants to be given the day off, to take home their payment for the year and perhaps gifts of hand-me-down clothing from their employers. To mark this event families celebrated by having a special meal together.

Today many of us are unable to spend much time with our families due to the fast and diverse ways of life we lead. Some may not even know their birth Mothers. Whatever the case may be, we can all thank our Mothers for giving us Life, what we do with it is down to us.
Your Mother is always with you, in the whisper of the trees, a smile from a stranger, the birds in your garden, the stars in the night sky. She’s your first love and your first heart break and nothing on earth can ever break the golden cord of love; not time, not even death.
So what ever you are doing on Mothering Sunday just be in the moment and send love to every Mother on the earth plan and in sprit. The greatest gift we can give is time and love not only to Mothers but to ourselves too.
